this began as a project to clear out the massive window i have open thats full of tabs of music to listen to. it kind of worked but then i opened more tabs. maybe in 2024!
my little ratings are super subjective and a lot of the albums i gave fewer thumbs up i ended up rocking with a ton over repeated listens. (for example: girls love jungle by gum.mp3 and dazegxd was a sleeper hit and i only listened to double cup by dj rashad once.) this style of always-listening-to-something new is different for me; i like to spend a lot of time with albums and to get to know them which was harder this year!
idk if i have a ton of insights, but it is really cool to see people pop up in this list. for example my girlfriend loves tim hecker and there was a while where we'd listen to one of his albums as we fell asleep and then the next morning i'd put it on at work before anyone else got there and i had the aux to myself. or like i joined a screamo band in january and a noise band in july and you can see me doing research by listening to a bunch of albums in the genre that my bandmates recommended. i went to the unwound reunion show and wanted to listen to a bunch of unwound to prepare. that sort of thing. (unwound was really good.)
most of the music i listened to came out very recently, which is partially a result of me excavating the tabs i've had open for a couple years (don't worry about it) and partially a result of how i find new music (music blogs, going to shows, formerly my twitter feed) valuing newness. this year i want to listen to more music from before like 2002! also more international music; a lot of this is from us/anglosphere. i would also like to move off spotify and onto bandcamp and onto my old ipod.
anyway i made charts of 1. my favorite albums from this year (loosely ranked) 2. my favorite albums i heard for the first time this year (loosely ranked) and 3. the albums i gave 3 thumbs up (chronological). below the cut is a list of all of the albums
SORRY STILL WORKING ON FINDING A LESS STUPID WAY TO DO THIS ONE XOXO
