my favorite albums i listened to for the first time in 2024 but that came out earlier
all the albums i gave three thumbs up, my highest rating, this year
i listened to 315 albums this year! wow! this was a continuation of my project to clear out the massive amount of tabs and recommendations of music i’ve gotten over the years and i was pretty successful! after my computer crashed bigtime i migrated all the tabs to a text file with hyperlinks but there are only 21 left as of writing. hooray! who knows what i’ll do when i’m done with those! maybe i'll read ulysses.
again don’t know if i have a ton of insight about all of this but i feel like my taste really narrowed this year / i found a bunch of rabbit holes that were fun. i’ve gotten nearly-exclusively into noisy ambient / long songs / free jazz / straight up noise / evil kick drum music. i simply like it when a song works towards transcendence until it bursts at the seams!! if there’s a guitar i’m likely not interested. this has made sharing music with most of my friends difficult, and i know that i’m the problem. i tried to talk to a friend’s very normal girlfriend about music and we had absolutely no taste in common. she didn’t know what bandcamp was. the next week i tried to listen to music normal people listen to and i didn’t like much of it and then i immediately listened to weird shit (dj e) and loved it. shoutout!
more eaze really had a banner year for me, i really connected with paris paris texas texas, in e, lacuna and parlor, and computer and recording works for girls. it’s pretty wild to put out 4 really fucking good albums in a year that still have strong and distinct identities; standouts for me include blanking intervals and geoguessr.
it’s once again fun to see trends and moments in my life be reflected by the music i listened to. in january i briefly worked a job whose morning crew/owner liked lonnie liston smith and free jazz. my ex and i fell asleep to quiet logic. i listened to the new vampire weekend driving through western pa after seeing the eclipse. i heard brat for the first time driving in chicago with my friends. my summer was tough and no music sounded good! in august i started working a part of my job where i was left alone for 6 hours a day and could listen to whatever i wanted. i listened to neighborhoods on a perfect crisp autumn day. i listened to maze while making chili waiting for the ball to drop. it’s been a weird year.
i think next year i'm once again trying to move over to ipod and static files instead of streaming; i've been pretty good about using exclusively bandcamp this year and want to continue that. hopefully will be off spotify soon! next year i want to listen to more dj mixes, delineate more genres of dance music in my head, and listen to even more music from outside the anglosphere!
